Located off the coast of Nagasaki, Ojika Island is a remote island rich in history and local culture. In this experience, you will start in the central Fuefuki district and walk along the island’s small paths, discovering the everyday life and history of Ojika.
The Fuefuki district, home to the ferry terminal and local shops, serves as both the gateway to the island and its daily hub. People are believed to have lived here since the Jomon period. During the Edo era, the area prospered through whaling, and in the Meiji and Taisho periods, trade in abalone brought further activity. Traces of this history remain throughout the town today, where traditional wooden buildings, narrow alleys, and rows of homes create a nostalgic island atmosphere.
During the tour, you will slowly explore the Fuefuki area, walking through paths and neighborhoods where everyday island life can still be felt. Rather than simply visiting tourist spots, you’ll walk through the rhythms of daily life and experience the unique pace and atmosphere of Ojika.
Along the way, you will visit Shinkosha Printing, the island’s only printing company. At this workshop, which has supported island life for over 100 years, you will try traditional letterpress printing. By using real type and tools that have been used for generations, you’ll create your own printed piece and gain a closer appreciation of the island’s craftsmanship and working traditions.
By walking through the town, meeting local people, and creating something with your hands, you’ll discover the deeper charm of Ojika. This is more than a sightseeing tour—it’s an experience that lets you feel the depth of everyday island life.
